Baby Sack

Today I finished the cuff of the first fingerless glove for my cousin. I had a mini disaster while making it. My knitting needle fell out of the work while it was in my bag, and I had to figure out where I was in the pattern and fix my dropped stitches. Now I am starting on the hand of the glove.

The first thing I made for my son was a knitted sleeping bag. I used several yarns, it's mostly Lion Brand Homespun in various colors. The body of the sleeping bag is double ribbed. I used reverse sockinette for the casing to the drawstring, I used an eyelash in addition to the blue to make it look like a mane. Finally, I crocheted the drawstring. I was originally going to line the sleeping bag with an old t-shirt, to keep my little guy's fingers from getting stuck in the holes of the yarn, but I decided that since he wears little outfits with hand coverings so it doesn't matter right now. I still might line it, but not until he's bigger.

It Begins

I started classes today, only one class today, so it wasn't that bad. I've been working on the fingerless gloves I'm making for my cousin. I'm half done with one cuff. It's going well, I'm using the pattern on knitty.com called Kingdom. The only difference is I won't finish the fingers.

I made several of my cousins, and my sister, headbands. They chose different yarns, but I used the same pattern. I let them choose the number of petals in their flowers as well. 5 or 6 petals works the best.

Scarf Status: Complete

Today I finished my mother's Birthday Scarf despite screaming babies and other distractions. I think it turned out well. Nothing overly fancy, but pretty nice none the less. I'm including the basic pattern, not including the specific birthdays I used for my mother's scarf.

Crochet cast on work sockinette stitch (will also work for garter stitch)
CO 20 sts
Rows 1-12: Knit odd rows, purl even rows
start number pattern (7/10/1856)
Row 13: dropstitch
Rows 14-20: Knit odd rows, purl even rows
Row 21: dropstitch
Rows 22-31: Knit odd rows, purl even rows
Row 32: dropstitch
Row 33: Purl
Row 34: dropstitch
Rows 35-42: Knit odd rows, purl even rows
Row 43: dropstitch
Rows 44-48: Knit odd rows, purl even rows
Row 49: dropstitch
Rows 50-55: Knit odd rows, purl even rows
At this point you can either add other dates or repeat this one. I used my mother's birthday, followed by my birthday and finally my little sister's birthay.
Note: for numbers using 0, you can either use 2 consecutive dropstitch rows, or knit that number of rows, as with 10 in the example. Alternatively you can ignore the zero and omit it all together.

I ended the scarf with a few inches of sockinette.

Mom's Birthday Scarf

I started my mother's scarf last night and worked on it all day today, and I hope to finish it tomorrow. I'm calling it her birthday scarf for two reasons. 1 tomorrow (today now) is her birthday, and I am using her, my, and my younger sister's birthdays as the pattern for the scarf.

I have always been interested in numbers and their significance. I once knitted a hat with a binary message in it. I used knit for 1 and purl for 0. I used a binary translator online to encode my message, and simply knit the pattern around after a few inches of sockinette. I thought it looked pretty cool, though I never finished it and eventually ripped it apart to use the yarn for something else.

Anyway, for this scarf I took each digit in our birthdays and knitted that number of rows with a drop stitch row in between. Pictures and pattern (it's really simple but I'll write it down anyway) to follow when finished, maybe my mom will even model it for me.

Another pattern I created was originally designed for my best friend and cousin, Raquel. It is a headband with a flower. When my younger cousins and sisters saw it, the all wanted one so I knit them ones as well. I still have to make my sister's though. I will be posting a picture of that with a pattern as well. It's a nice quick project that looks really cute.

Current Projects

I'm fond of starting things only to get bored with them and then starting something else. Right now I'm making a Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo stuffed toy (crochet), a pair of fingerless gloves (knit), A loopy ball (crochet), and a scarf that I haven't decided if I'm going to knit or crochet. I just finished a shawl that I plan on selling, I just have to weave in the ends. I will be posting various past projects as well as the projects I am working on and finish.

The scarf I'm starting is for my mother, with the yarn she gave me. It's been sitting in her room for at least two years, and she finally gave it to me to do something with it.

Crinkly Pomegranate

I really want to make things for my son, but I don't know what to make. I've already made him a hat, knitted while I was in labor, and I made him a blanket too so I began to think about what else I could make. I decided to make him a ball. I stuffed it with plastic bags to make it kind of crinkly sounding. I crocheted this out of Lionbrand Homespun. I had some leftovers from a project from awhile ago. When I got to the end, I had a few yards left, not enough to really do anything else with but long enough I felt bad wasting it. Since I was using a pinky red color I decided to make it a pomegranate instead of a ball. I think it turned out pretty well. The pattern is pretty basic. I started with the magic ring cast on to make the bottom completely secure. I ended each row with a sl st and began each row with ch1, but this creates a line in the work so just sc all would make the work more solid. I also only

Start with Magic Ring
Row 1: Work 6 sc in magic ring (6 sts)
Row 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sts)
Row 3: *2 sc in next st, sc next st* repeat between * around (18 sts)
Row 4: *2 sc in next st, sc next 2* repeat between * around (24 sts)
Row 5: *2 sc in next st, sc next 3* repeat between * around (30 sts)
Row 6: *2 sc in next st, sc next 4* repeat between * around (36 sts)
Rows 7-9: sc in each st around (36 sts)
Row 10: *sc2tog, sc next 4* repeat between * around (30 sts)
Row 11: * sc2tog, sc next 3* repeat between * around (24 sts)
Row 12: *sc2tog, sc next 2* repeat between * around (18 sts)
Row 13: *sc2tog, sc nest st* repeat between * around (12 sts)
Stuff now if you haven't already.
Row 14: sc2tog around (6 sts)
Row 15: 2 sc in each st around (12 sts)
Row 16: *ch2, dc, ch1 sc* around sl st in 1st ch

Sew opening inside the top so stuffing doesn't escape. The last row looks a like a flower than a pomegranate top until you finish the fruit by sewing the middle of each sc tog to make it look more like it is supposed to.

Blog Cherry

My vision for this blog is a catalog of my craft endeavors. I have many hobbies. A female Jack of All Trades, and therefore master of none. :)
As far as fiber arts go, I've been knitting since I was a sophomore in high school, crocheting off and on since middle school, and I have a loom, but I haven't done too much with that yet. I've been taking metalworking classes for 5 years now, I work mostly with silver, and copper due to cost. I've dabbled with clay and beading, my mother is pro with the bead work.
I'm currently in college. Community college right now, eventually my major will be geology, but right now I'm just getting my GPA up and finishing core classes. I gave birth to a baby boy, Walter, almost 8 weeks ago. He believes that sleep is for the weak, so it'll be interesting to see how this coming semester will be. This should be the last semester for me at this community college, my parents bought a house in NC so we will probably be moving there this summer. I'm 22 and I am back living with my parents, hopefully just until I get my degree(s). I plan to get a chemistry degree eventually as well.
Anyway, I will be posting projects past and present and maybe a pattern or two, I tend to make my own, though I never finish writing them down. I shall begin with said plan when I wake up. I hope I can get my sleep clock right for classes. :/
